OK Go

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

OK Go is an American rock band, founded in 1998 and based in Los Angeles. The line-up consists of Damian Kulash on vocals and guitar, Tim Nordwind on bass and vocals, Dan Konopka on drums and percussion, and Andy Ross on guitar, keyboards and vocals. Kulash met Nordwind at the age of eleven at Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan. The band name comes from a joke from that time: the art teacher had an assistant who was often high and who kept shouting while drawing: OK... Go! The group formed in Chicago and moved to Los Angeles in 2001.

Music and breakthrough

The debut album OK Go was released in 2002, followed by Oh No in 2005. After that the original guitarist Andy Duncan left the band. Three more albums followed: Of the Blue Colour of the Sky in 2010, Hungry Ghosts in 2014 and And the Adjacent Possible in 2025. The group is best known for its idiosyncratic, intricate music videos, which are often elaborately choreographed, filmed in a single long take and make heavy use of practical effects and optical illusions. The video for Here It Goes Again, in which the band dances on moving treadmills, won a Grammy for best music video in 2007.

Influence

OK Go shows how a rock band in the internet age could turn the music video into an art form of its own. Its videos became almost as important as the songs, and they changed how artists think about the image.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Here It Goes Again and notice the guitar riff, the tight rhythm section and the chorus. Then watch the video with the treadmills and hear how well music and image are matched.
