Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

In 1971 Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan took over his family's qawwali group in Faisalabad. With his enormous vocal range and lightning-fast improvisations on sargam, the Indian note names, he stretched a song into a rousing trance. After his performance at the WOMAD festival in 1985 he worked with Peter Gabriel and with the guitarist Michael Brook, with whom he made Mustt Mustt (1990). In this way qawwali became known worldwide.

Listening

Listening tip. In Man Kunto Maula, a song attributed to Amir Khusrau, listen to how choir, hand claps and harmonium get steadily faster and louder.
