Naushad

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Naushad Ali grew up in Lucknow and became acquainted with Hindustani classical music and the folk music of North India. In the 1930s he moved to Bombay, where he worked his way up in film music. His great breakthrough was Rattan (1944). Naushad based many film songs on classical ragas. In Baiju Bawra (1952) Mohammed Rafi sings Man Tadpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj in raga Malkauns. For Mother India (1957) and the historical epic Mughal-e-Azam (1960) he wrote large song scenes with chorus and orchestra. In it Lata Mangeshkar sings Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya. Naushad linked the classical tradition with popular Hindi film.
