Maurice Jaubert
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Maurice Jaubert, from Nice, was the most important film composer of French poetic realism. He worked with Jean Vigo, René Clair, Julien Duvivier and Marcel Carné. Jaubert felt that film music should not underline every emotion. It had to give the film a rhythm and atmosphere of its own. For Zéro de conduite (1933) he played a piece backwards under a slowed-down scene, so that the sound became unreal. In L'Atalante (1934) and Le quai des brumes (1938) small ensembles, waltzes and street songs can be heard. Jaubert was killed in action at the front in June 1940. François Truffaut later reused his music in four of his films.
