Mark Fitz-Gerald

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Mark Fitz-Gerald is a conductor who made recordings of film music from the early years of sound film. Nothing about his life was found in our sources. The Wikipedia page that came up for the name was about an episode of the television series Black Mirror and therefore does not belong to him. For that reason only what the album list shows is given here.

Music and breakthrough

His recordings include Odna from 2008, the complete music for the film from 1929 to 1931, The Girlfriends and New Babylon, the world-premiere recording of the complete score, from 2011. Carmen also appeared in 2011. The titles Odna, The Girlfriends and New Babylon belong to films from the Soviet Union for which the composer Dmitri Shostakovich wrote the music, so these are recordings of lost or rarely played film music. The release of a complete score is important, because much film music of that era never appeared on record and could only be heard in the cinema.

Influence

The editors still have to establish who exactly Fitz-Gerald is, which orchestras and labels he works with and what his own background is.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to an excerpt from New Babylon in Fitz-Gerald's recording and notice how the music accompanies the silent film: in short, sharp passages that change mood from scene to scene.
