Lili Boulanger

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Lili Boulanger grew up in a Parisian family of musicians and was the younger sister of Nadia Boulanger, later a renowned teacher of composition. In 1913, with her cantata Faust et Hélène, she became the first woman to win the Prix de Rome for composition. She was ill all her life and died in 1918, at the age of twenty-four. In that short time she wrote music with a dark colour of its own, such as the great psalm setting Du fond de l'abîme.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the beginning of Du fond de l'abîme and hear how low, heavy instruments build up a dark sound before the choir enters.
