Kongar-ol Ondar
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Kongar-ol Ondar grew up in the west of Tuva and became a master of khöömei, the throat singing in which one singer lets a fundamental and a whistling overtone be heard at the same time. In 1992 he won an international throat-singing competition, after which invitations from Europe and America followed. He invited the blind American blues musician Paul Pena to Tuva. The film Genghis Blues (1999) follows their journey.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to Alash Hem and find the two layers in a single voice: a low droning tone and above it a whistling melody.
