Juice WRLD

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Juice WRLD was the stage name of Jarad Anthony Higgins, an American rapper, singer and songwriter from Chicago. He was born in 1998, had piano lessons as a child and later played guitar, drums and trumpet. His mother did not let him listen to hip hop. He grew up with rock and pop, via video games such as Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and Guitar Hero. Around the age of fifteen he put his first songs on SoundCloud, at first under the name JuicetheKidd. The name Juice WRLD is derived from the 1992 film Juice.

Music and breakthrough

In 2017 the EP 9 9 9 was released, containing Lucid Dreams. He signed with Lil Bibby and shortly afterwards with Interscope Records. Lucid Dreams was released as a single in 2018 and reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. His debut album Goodbye & Good Riddance (2018) followed, with All Girls Are the Same, among others. Then came Wrld on Drugs (2018) with Future and Death Race for Love (2019), his first number one on the American album chart.

Influence

He became a leading name in emo rap and SoundCloud rap, genres that reached the general public in the mid-2010s. His music combines sung lines with rapping, about sadness, love and addiction. Juice WRLD died on 8 December 2019 of an overdose, aged 21. After his death Legends Never Die (2020) and Fighting Demons (2021) were released, among others, and in 2024 The Party Never Ends.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Lucid Dreams. Notice how he half sings and half raps over a calm, melodic beat, and how the heartache in the lyric sits beside an almost singalong melody.
