João da Bahiana

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

João da Bahiana, usually spelled João da Baiana, was a Brazilian percussionist and samba musician from Rio de Janeiro. He played the pandeiro, the Brazilian tambourine that plays a leading role in samba. He belonged to the old guard of carioca samba, the generation that shaped the genre at the beginning of the twentieth century, and his name is often mentioned together with that of Pixinguinha.

On record he can be heard on Macumba from 1955 and Gente da antiga from 1968, an album on which older masters of samba play together, among others. His importance lies in preserving the rhythm and atmosphere of early samba.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to a samba with pandeiro and notice how the small hand drum carries the rhythm, with short, tight strokes that both keep the beat and embellish it.
