Jack Liebeck

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Jack Liebeck is a British-German violinist. He was born on 4 August 1980 in London. In 2010 he won a Classical Brit in the category of young British classical performer. BBC Music Magazine spoke of an enchanting silvery tone. His repertoire runs from Mozart's chamber music to contemporary works, such as Brett Dean's violin concerto The Lost Art of Letter Writing from 2008. He also loves science and, among other things, gave the world premiere of a work connected with it.

Music and breakthrough

As a soloist and chamber musician he performed with all the major British orchestras and, beyond them, with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and the Oslo Philharmonic. He collaborated with Renaud and Gautier Capuçon, Angela Hewitt and Jean-Yves Thibaudet, among others. His debut album, Works for Violin and Piano with Katya Apekisheva, appeared in 2002 and was nominated for a Classical Brit. His Dvořák won the prize for best young artist in 2010. He played the solo in the film music for Jane Eyre from 2011 and for Anna Karenina from 2012.

Influence

From 2014 he has recorded for Hyperion, including Kreisler and a series of violin concertos by Bruch, with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Martyn Brabbins. He plays a Guadagnini from 1785, the Ex-Wilhelmj. In 2022 he became artistic director of the Australian Festival of Chamber Music. In this way he is both performer and organiser, and brings romantic and modern repertoire to a wide audience.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to his Bruch and notice the tone of the violin at the beginning: is it silvery and light, or warm and full, and how does that change in the fast sections?
