I Fiamminghi
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
I Fiamminghi is a Belgian chamber orchestra from Brussels under the direction of the conductor Rudolf Werthen. Werthen is a violinist, conductor and teacher, born in Mechelen. He was taught by André Gertler and Henryk Szeryng. He founded the orchestra and is its artistic director. In 1989 he was also chief conductor of the symphony orchestra of the Flemish Opera. Since 1975 he has taught at the Royal Conservatoire of Ghent. In 1971 he was a laureate, with seventh prize for violin, at the Queen Elisabeth Competition, and in 1985 he sat on the violin jury.
Music and breakthrough
The name literally means the Flemings and refers to the orchestra's Flemish origins. The discography runs from the Baroque to the present. Recordings include Le quattro stagioni in 1986, cello concertos in 1987 and 1994, Fratres in 1994 and Celestial Gate in 1995. Among the titles there are also newly written works, such as Creations, which shows that the orchestra plays both the standard repertoire and contemporary composers.
Influence
For the history of pop, I Fiamminghi is above all an orchestra that is often hired for recordings. That is typical of a chamber orchestra of this kind: it is small enough to be agile and large enough for a full string sound.
