Guillaume Dufay
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Guillaume Dufay began as a choirboy in Cambrai and later returned there as a canon. In between he worked for years in Italy and Savoy, including in the papal chapel. He added the soft sound of English thirds and sixths to the French tradition and made the mass into one coherent whole. His motet Nuper rosarum flores was heard in 1436 at the consecration of Florence cathedral, beneath Brunelleschi's new dome.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to Nuper rosarum flores and notice how the high voices sing freely above two low voices that very slowly carry a plainchant melody.
