Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina was a choirmaster in Rome, at St Peter's among other places, and wrote more than a hundred masses. After the Council of Trent the Church wanted the sung text to remain intelligible, and Palestrina became the model of a clear, balanced polyphony. According to a later legend, his Missa Papae Marcelli thereby saved polyphonic church music. His style was taught for centuries as the model of pure counterpoint.
