Germaine Tailleferre

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Germaine Tailleferre was the only woman in Les Six. She is best known for her chamber music and piano works, but she also wrote music for dozens of films. In the 1930s she worked with the director Maurice Cloche and wrote music for a series of documentaries. After the war came, among others, Coïncidences (1947) and Les grandes personnes (1961). Her film music is clear and light, with a French neoclassical tone: distinct melodies, transparent accompaniment and few heavy effects. Most of her film work remained unpublished and has therefore hardly been recorded. What you can hear now is mainly piano arrangements of excerpts. Her career shows how, in France, even concert composers began writing for the cinema from the early days of sound film.
