Fanny Mendelssohn
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Fanny Mendelssohn was as gifted a pianist and composer as her brother Felix, but her family did not consider a public career suitable for a woman. In the parental home in Berlin she led the Sonntagsmusiken, where her own work was played, and some of her songs were published under Felix's name. Her piano cycle Das Jahr from 1841 gives each month a piece of its own. Only in 1846, shortly before her death, did she publish under her own name.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to January from Das Jahr and hear how the piece begins like a dream, with floating chords that seem to have no fixed metre.
