Ensemble Die Reihe

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Ensemble Die Reihe · Ensemble die reihe is a Viennese ensemble for new music. The group was founded in 1958 by the composers Friedrich Cerha and Kurt Schwertsik and played works of the twentieth-century avant-garde. The name has another meaning too: Die Reihe was a German journal on serial music, published between 1955 and 1962, and has no connection with this ensemble.

Music and breakthrough

The recordings show a broad range of interests. A CD with Und Du... Verzeichnis Für K appeared in 2011, and a release with Couplets, Ballads, Orchestral Suites 2 to 4 and Die letzte Nacht in 2022. The name also turns up on recordings of Debussy, such as Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, Nocturnes, Chansons de Bilitis and Jeux, and of music by Satie.

Influence

The ensemble belongs to the generation that cleared the way for new music in Vienna after the Second World War. It gave composers a permanent group of players who could perform their work, and provided a platform for music that had little chance in ordinary concert halls. Little is recorded in this source about its line-up and precise history, and that has yet to be researched.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the recording of Debussy or of Satie and notice how a small ensemble makes the music sound clear and transparent, without the full sound of a large orchestra.
