Ensemble Albalonga

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Ensemble Albalonga is an early-music ensemble about which very little has been recorded. It was led by the conductor Anibal Cetrangolo and in 2001 recorded, for the Belgian label Pavane, a three-CD set of Amor es todo invención: Júpiter y Anfitrión, a zarzuela from 1721 by Giacomo Facco to a libretto by José de Cañizares.

Music and breakthrough

The discography shows where the group focused: Baroque music theatre and earlier opera. Besides Facco's zarzuela, Euridice (2000) and Peru - El Diamante were released. The three CDs were a substantial release for a work that was hardly known outside Spain. A zarzuela is a Spanish form of music theatre in which sung and spoken parts alternate.

Influence

Albalonga's work belongs to the movement that brings forgotten Baroque repertoire back to life in historically informed performances. Nothing has been recorded here about the ensemble's founding, its line-up or its precise instruments, and that information has yet to be researched.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to an excerpt from the recording of Euridice and notice how the singers are accompanied by a small Baroque ensemble instead of a large orchestra.
