Ben Klock

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Ben Klock is a German techno artist, DJ and record label owner. He was born in 1972 and grew into one of the regular faces of the Berlin techno scene. He is a resident DJ at Berghain, the Berlin club that for many enthusiasts is the centre of modern techno. In 2006 he founded his own techno label, Klockworks, on which he and other producers release their music.

Music and breakthrough

His debut album One was released in 2009 and contains the track Subzero. The later album LAYER ONE came out in 2024. Techno of this kind is made for the dance floor: long, tight tracks in which drum machines, bass sounds and synthesizer sounds change slowly, so that a set lasting hours feels like a single whole.

Influence

Klock belongs to the generation that kept the techno of Detroit and the club culture of post-Wall Berlin alive in the twenty-first century. That Berghain as a club and Klockworks as a label are both linked to his name makes him a good example of how a DJ in that world can be a selector, producer and entrepreneur all at once.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Subzero. Notice how little changes and how great the effect is of a single new sound slowly entering above the steady beat.
