Basil Poledouris

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Basil Poledouris was born in 1945 in Kansas City to Greek immigrants. He grew up in the Greek Orthodox Church. He named that church and the work of Miklós Rózsa as his most important models. He studied film and music at the University of Southern California. There he met the director John Milius. For Milius he wrote Big Wednesday (1978) and Conan the Barbarian (1982), a large orchestral work with chorus. With Paul Verhoeven he made RoboCop (1987) and Starship Troopers (1997). The Hunt for Red October (1990) is also his. He won an Emmy for the miniseries Lonesome Dove (1989).

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the broad, epic build-up: heavy brass themes, plenty of percussion and a chorus that sings as if in a church or an ancient epic.
