Barrington Pheloung

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Barrington Pheloung was born in 1954 in Manly, near Sydney. He moved to England and studied composition and guitar at the Royal College of Music in London. He became known for his music for the detective series Inspector Morse (1987–2000). According to Pheloung himself, he sometimes spelled out the murderer's name in Morse code in the music. Sometimes he chose instead the name of another character, to put the viewer off the scent. The series also made extensive use of opera and other classical music. Pheloung also wrote the music for the spin-off series Lewis (2006–2015) and Endeavour (2012–2019). For film he composed, among others, Truly, Madly, Deeply (1990) and Hilary and Jackie (1998). He died in 2019.
