Fear of a Black Planet is het derde album van Public Enemy, uitgebracht op 10 april 1990 door Def Jam en Columbia. Het werd geproduceerd door het team The Bomb Squad, dat het sampleweefsel van het vorige album, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, verder uitbouwde. Rapper Chuck D wilde een diepe, complexe plaat maken. De ophef rond Professor Griff, die na antisemitische uitspraken uit de groep werd gezet, speelde mee bij het schrijven.
Het geluid bestaat uit ingewikkelde collages van wisselende ritmes, veel samples, fragmenten uit de media en eigenzinnige loops. De teksten gaan over organisatie en kracht binnen de zwarte gemeenschap, sociale problemen en rassenverhoudingen, en bekritiseren institutioneel racisme. De plaat was een commercieel en kritisch succes en verkocht twee miljoen exemplaren in de Verenigde Staten. In 2004 nam de Library of Congress haar op in het National Recording Registry.
