Graceland · Begin jaren tachtig zat Paul Simon in een dip: zijn relatie met Art Garfunkel was verslechterd, zijn huwelijk was voorbij en zijn vorige album Hearts and Bones was een mislukking. In 1984 raakte hij gefascineerd door een illegaal cassettebandje met mbaqanga, Zuid-Afrikaanse straatmuziek. Samen met zijn technicus Roy Halee nam hij in Johannesburg twee weken op met Zuid-Afrikaanse muzikanten. Later volgden opnames in Amerika met onder anderen Los Lobos en Rockin' Dopsie and the Twisters. Het album verscheen op 25 augustus 1986.

Graceland werd zijn succesvolste album en won in 1987 een Grammy voor het album van het jaar. De plaat bracht Afrikaanse muziek bij een groot Westers publiek. Er kwam ook kritiek: Simon zou de culturele boycot tegen Zuid-Afrika hebben doorbroken vanwege de apartheid. Hij zei dat het album een politieke verklaring was over samenwerking tussen zwart en wit.
