For the Roses verscheen in november 1972, tussen Blue en Court and Spark in, de twee grootste successen van Joni Mitchell. Het is haar vijfde studioalbum. Haar platenmaatschappij vroeg om een nummer voor de radio. Mitchell schreef You Turn Me On I'm a Radio, bedoeld als sarcastisch antwoord. Het werd haar eerste top 40 hit onder eigen naam. Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire is een dreigend, jazzy portret van de heroïneverslaving van haar toenmalige vriend James Taylor. Judgement of the Moon and Stars is geïnspireerd door Beethoven.

De critici waren lovend. The New York Times prees de elegante taal en de ironie, en Rolling Stone noemde haar vocale acteerwerk en frasering. Robert Christgau hoorde hoe ze de vreemde sprongen van haar stem had omgezet in muziek die bijna klassiek klonk. In 2007 nam de Library of Congress het album op in het National Recording Registry.
