Rei Momo

Rei Momo verscheen op 3 oktober 1989 en was het eerste echte soloalbum van David Byrne. Daarvoor had hij in 1981 al het samenwerkingsalbum My Life in the Bush of Ghosts gemaakt. De plaat kwam uit bij Luaka Bop en Sire. Drie nummers, Loco de Amor, Good and Evil en Office Cowboy, stonden niet op de lp, maar wel op cassette en cd.

Het album bevat veel verschillende Latijns-Amerikaanse stijlen: rumba, mambo, chachachá en bolero uit Cuba, merengue uit de Dominicaanse Republiek, bomba uit Puerto Rico, cumbia uit Colombia en samba uit Brazilië. Toch wordt er vooral in het Engels gezongen. Onder anderen Kirsty MacColl, Willie Colón en Celia Cruz doen als gast mee. Byrne speelde Dirty Old Town en Loco de Amor in 1989 bij Saturday Night Live. De critici waren positief. Alexis Petridis noemde de plaat later in The Guardian een onderschatte vreugde.
