Rick Wakeman

Rick Wakeman is een Engelse toetsenist en componist, geboren op 18 mei 1949 in West-Londen. Hij wilde concertpianist worden, maar stopte in 1969 met het Royal College of Music en werd een gewilde sessiemuzikant. Van naar schatting tweeduizend sessies maakte hij er enkele voor David Bowie, op Space Oddity en Life on Mars?, voor Cat Stevens in Morning Has Broken, en voor Elton John, Marc Bolan en Lou Reed. Na een korte periode bij de Strawbs kwam hij in 1971 bij Yes. Daar speelde hij op Fragile in 1971, Close to the Edge in 1972 en Tales From Topographic Oceans in 1973.
Muziek en doorbraak
Zijn eigen werk begon met The Six Wives of Henry VIII uit 1973, gevolgd door Journey to the Centre of the Earth in 1974 en The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table in 1975. Het zijn conceptalbums vol progressieve rock. In 1974 vormde hij de English Rock Ensemble en in 1975 schreef hij de muziek voor Ken Russells film Lisztomania. Zijn discografie telt meer dan honderd soloalbums, ook new age en christelijke muziek, zoals Country Airs in 1986 en The Gospels in 1987.
Invloed
Hij speelt Hammondorgel, Moog en Mellotron met technische virtuositeit en staat bekend om zijn capes op het podium. In de jaren tachtig en negentig werkte hij ook voor kleinere markten, in de omroep en bij een eigen label, en bleef hij optreden, ook met eenmansshows waarin hij muziek en anekdotes combineert. Wakeman bracht de klank van de klassieke muziek binnen de rock.
