Kenny Burrell

Kenny Burrell is een Amerikaanse jazzgitarist, geboren op 31 juli 1931 in Detroit. Zijn voorbeelden waren Charlie Christian, Oscar Moore, Django Reinhardt, T-Bone Walker en Muddy Waters. Daardoor klinkt zijn spel zowel bebop als blues.
Muziek en doorbraak
In 1956 nam hij zijn eerste album als leider op voor Blue Note: Introducing Kenny Burrell. In 1963 verscheen Midnight Blue, een samenwerking met saxofonist Stanley Turrentine, die critici als hoogtepunt noemen. Duke Ellington noemde Burrell zijn favoriete gitarist. Burrell nam veel Ellington-tributes op en gaf vanaf 1978 aan UCLA de cursus Ellingtonia. Sinds 1996 is hij directeur van de jazzopleiding aan de UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.
Invloed
Burrell speelde een ontspannen, bluesy jazz met een warme gitaarklank. Hij hoort bij de gitaristen die in de hardbop en soul jazz van de jaren vijftig en zestig het solo-instrument van de gitaar uitbouwden, naast mensen als Wes Montgomery en Grant Green. Als docent gaf hij zijn kennis door aan een nieuwe generatie. Zijn werk laat zien hoe de jazz van Detroit op de blues en op Ellington teruggreep.
