Glenn Gould was een Canadese pianist en radiomaker, geboren op 25 september 1932 in Toronto en overleden op 4 oktober 1982. Zijn moeder gaf hem pianoles, en op zijn tiende ging hij naar het conservatorium van Toronto. Op zijn twaalfde slaagde hij met de hoogste cijfers voor zijn laatste pianoexamen. In 1952 richtte hij met zijn jeugdvriend Robert Fulford New Music Associates op, die zijn eerste optredens organiseerde, waaronder zijn debuut met de Goldberg Variations van Bach.

Muziek en doorbraak

Met The Goldberg Variations uit 1956 werd hij wereldberoemd. Hij gold als een van de grootste pianisten van de twintigste eeuw, vooral als vertolker van Bach. Zijn spel viel op door technisch meesterschap en het vermogen om de meerstemmigheid van Bach helder te laten horen. Hij speelde laag achter de piano, in een snel tempo, en toch bleef elke noot los en duidelijk. Het grootste deel van de romantische pianomuziek liet hij links liggen. Hij koos vooral Bach en Beethoven, en daarnaast onder anderen Berg, Schoenberg en Křenek.

Invloed

Gould was ook schrijver en omroeper. Hij maakte televisieprogramma's over klassieke muziek en drie radiodocumentaires, de Solitude Trilogy, over afgelegen delen van Canada, waarin hij stemmen en geluiden als muziek monteerde. Zo liet hij zien dat een opname zelf een kunstvorm kan zijn.
