Esa-Pekka Salonen is een Finse dirigent en componist, geboren in 1958 in Helsinki. Hij studeerde hoorn en compositie aan de Sibelius-Academie en dirigeren bij Jorma Panula. Met zijn studiegenoot Magnus Lindberg richtte hij de groep Korvat auki op voor nieuwe muziek en het experimentele ensemble Toimii. Hij zag zichzelf eerst vooral als componist en begon met dirigeren om zijn eigen werk uit te laten voeren. In 1983 viel hij op korte termijn in voor Michael Tilson Thomas bij Mahlers derde symfonie met het Philharmonia Orchestra in Londen, zonder de partituur te kennen. Dat lanceerde zijn dirigentencarrière.

Muziek en doorbraak

Hij was van 1984 tot 1995 chef van het Zweeds Radio Symfonieorkest en van 1985 tot 1994 eerste gastdirigent van het Philharmonia. In 1984 debuteerde hij in de Verenigde Staten bij het Los Angeles Philharmonic, waar hij later muzikaal leider werd. Van 2020 tot 2025 leidde hij het San Francisco Symphony. In 2003 richtte hij met Michael Tydén en Valery Gergiev het Baltic Sea Festival op. De opnamen beginnen in 1986, met Messiaens Turangalîla-Symphonie, Sibelius en Stravinsky, onder wie The Firebird en Le Sacre du Printemps.

Invloed

Salonen brengt de klassieke traditie en de nieuwe muziek samen. Hij dirigeert Sibelius en Stravinsky, maar ook Lutosławski, Messiaen en zijn eigen werk. Daarmee behoort hij tot de dirigenten die hedendaagse muziek een vaste plaats in het grote orkestrepertoire gaven.
