Ensemble Galilei

Ensemble Galilei is een Amerikaanse groep die oude muziek, Keltische traditionals en nieuwe composities met elkaar verbindt. Ze nam vanaf 1987 een reeks albums op, te beginnen met The Mystic and the Muse. In de jaren negentig volgden Music in the Great Hall in 1992, Ancient Noëls en Following the Moon in 1993. Daarna kwamen Come, Gentle Night: Music of Shakespeare's World in 2000, From the Isles to the Courts in 2001 en A Winter's Night in 2002.

Muziek en doorbraak

Ook in later jaren bleef de groep opnemen. Er verschenen From the Edge of the World in 2007, A Change of Worlds in 2012, Surrounded by Angels: A Christmas Celebration with Ensemble Galilei in 2013 en From Whence We Came in 2015. De titels laten zien waar het ensemble zich op richtte: muziek uit de Britse eilanden en de Keltische wereld, de tijd van Shakespeare en het kerst- en winterrepertoire.

Invloed

De klank van zo'n groep is kamermuzikaal. Snaarinstrumenten, fluiten en slagwerk zorgen voor een zachte, akoestische sfeer waarin middeleeuwse en renaissancemuziek niet als museumstuk klinkt, maar als levende volksmuziek. Zo sloot het ensemble aan bij de belangstelling voor oude en Keltische muziek die vanaf de jaren tachtig bij een breed publiek groeide. Over de oprichting en bezetting is in de beschikbare bron niets vastgelegd en dat moet nog worden nagezocht.
