Andrew Manze is een Britse violist en dirigent, geboren op 14 januari 1965 in Beckenham, Kent. Hij studeerde Klassieke talen aan Clare College in Cambridge en leerde viool bij onder anderen Simon Standage aan de Royal Academy of Music. Bij Ton Koopman speelde hij in het Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra. Zo begon hij als specialist in oude muziek. In 1996 werd hij associate director van de Academy of Ancient Music.

Muziek en doorbraak

Voor het label Harmonia Mundi nam hij als solist veel barokmuziek op. Bekend werden de Manchester Sonatas in 1995, Twelve Fantasias for Violin Solo en Gulliver Suite in hetzelfde jaar, Le Quattro Stagioni in 1996 en de soloconcerten en dubbelconcerten van Bach in 1997. Van 2003 tot 2007 was hij artistiek leider van The English Concert. Daarna dirigeerde hij ook moderner repertoire, zoals de symfonieën van Brahms met het Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, waarvan hij van 2006 tot 2014 chef-dirigent was, en Mendelssohn en Vaughan Williams. Sinds 2014 is hij chef-dirigent van de NDR Radiophilharmonie. In 2024 werd hij eerste gastdirigent van het Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

Invloed

Manze schrijft en geeft les, werkt mee aan nieuwe uitgaven van Mozart en Bach en praat regelmatig op radio en televisie over muziek. In 2011 kreeg hij de Rolf Schock-prijs. Hij laat zien hoe de historische uitvoeringspraktijk de weg vond naar het gewone concertpodium.
