Alan Howarth

Alan Howarth is een Amerikaanse componist en sound designer die vooral bekend is van zijn werk voor Hollywood en van zijn samenwerking met John Carpenter. Hij groeide op in Cleveland, Ohio, en speelde in rockbands die voor The Who en Cream het voorprogramma deden. Daarna maakte hij met synthesizers eigen muziek in de groepen Braino en Pi Corp. Vanaf 1976 deed hij synthesizerwerk voor de fusionband Weather Report, waardoor hij naar Los Angeles verhuisde.
Muziek en doorbraak
Zijn grote doorbraak kwam in 1980, toen zijn muziek werd gebruikt voor de trailer van een Star Trek-film. Daarna werkte hij aan de volgende vijf films uit de serie. Met Carpenter maakte hij muziek voor Escape from New York, Halloween II, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, Christine, Big Trouble in Little China, Prince of Darkness en They Live. Zijn geluidsontwerpen horen we in Raiders of the Lost Ark, Poltergeist, Back to the Future Part II en Total Recall. Zijn team won Oscars voor het geluid van The Hunt for Red October en Bram Stoker's Dracula.
Invloed
Howarth speelt zijn filmmuziek ook live bij fragmenten uit de films, onder meer in Genève, Krakau, New York en Parijs. Hij werkte ook aan meerkanaals surroundgeluid, de voorloper van latere systemen als Dolby Atmos. Zijn werk laat zien hoe de synthesizer in de jaren tachtig het geluid van de horror- en sciencefictionfilm bepaalde.
