Chausseestraße 131

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Chausseestraße 131 was the second LP by the East German singer-songwriter and poet Wolf Biermann, after Wolf Biermann (Ost) zu Gast bei Wolfgang Neuss (West), which he made together with Wolfgang Neuss. It was his first album after the SED had banned him from performing or releasing music through the state company VEB Deutsche Schallplatten. A professional studio was therefore out of reach. Biermann recorded the record in his own apartment, at the address in the title, with a Grundig tape recorder and a Sennheiser microphone that had been smuggled in from West Germany. On the recording you therefore hear the traffic outside.

In 1969 Biermann received the Fontane Prize. He publicly passed it on to the APO, the protest movement of German students, and donated 10,000 marks to the lawyer Horst Mahler.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Das Barlach-Lied and notice how bare the recording sounds, as if you were sitting in the room itself. Can you also hear sounds from outside?
