Women and Children First
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Women and Children First was released in March 1980 as the group's third album, produced by Ted Templeman. It was recorded in about two weeks in Hollywood, at Sunset Studios, and for the first time contained no cover versions at all. More overdubs can be heard and there is less emphasis on backing vocals. Two songs, In a Simple Rhyme and Take Your Whiskey Home, had already been written six years earlier and recorded as demos. The opener And the Cradle Will Rock... sounds like a guitar, but is a Wurlitzer electric piano through a Marshall amplifier. In Could This Be Magic? Nicolette Larson sings along, the only female backing voice on a song by the band.
The reviews were mostly favourable and the record went platinum within a year. Critics heard a heavier and more serious group, and Rolling Stone and Kerrang! later put the album on their lists of the best metal albums.
