Cut
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Cut is the debut album by The Slits, an English group with singer Ari Up, guitarist Viv Albertine and bassist Tessa Pollitt. It was recorded at Ridge Farm Studios in Rusper and produced by Dennis Bovell. The album was released on 7 September 1979 on Island Records. The music blends punk and reggae with idiosyncratic art pop, and the group embraced the Jamaican influences completely, as one of the first bands to do so.
The record reached number thirty in the British album chart. Critics called it fun and catchy, despite the rough, unpolished sound. Ari Up's wild singing in particular was praised and later taken up by other post-punk bands. Rolling Stone wrote that bands such as Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney came into being because of the album, and Kurt Cobain listed it in his diary among his fifty favourite records. Typical Girls has a separate entry in Rolling Stone's list of the best songs.
