The Tipping Point
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album
The Tipping Point was released on 13 July 2004 on Questlove's Okayplayer Records and Geffen Records. It is the sixth album by The Roots and follows Phrenology from 2002. The title refers to the book by the journalist Malcolm Gladwell. The cover shows an edited 1944 police photograph of Malcolm X. The music sounds more varied and more pop-oriented than earlier work, with influences of soul, jazz and funk. The lyrics deal with the art of rapping, political insight and social themes.
Some tracks use samples, such as Star by Sly and the Family Stone and Stay Cool by Al Hirt. I Don't Care ended up in the game Gran Turismo 4. In its first week the album stood at number four on the American chart. Critics were mixed about the production and the lyrics, but most reviews were positive.
