Hackney Diamonds

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Hackney Diamonds · After the death of drummer Charlie Watts in 2021 the Rolling Stones became more serious about a new album. Their last record of original songs was A Bigger Bang from 2005; after that came only the blues album Blue & Lonesome. Earlier sessions had stalled. On the advice of Paul McCartney, guitarist Ronnie Wood brought in the producer Andrew Watt, who took over the recording in Los Angeles at the end of 2022. They worked like this for about four weeks, followed by two weeks of overdubs.

McCartney plays bass on two tracks. Elton John, Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder also take part, and former bassist Bill Wyman returned. The album also includes recordings from 2019, with Watts's last studio work. The title is London slang for the broken glass after a burglary. Critics were positive and, for some, considered this the strongest album in decades. It won the Grammy for Best Rock Album.

Listening

Listening tip. In Angry, the first single, listen to the guitars and to Mick Jagger's vocals. Ask yourself whether this sounds like a band from the past or from the present.
