We’re Only in It for the Money

We’re Only in It for the Money · We're Only in It for the Money is the third album by the Mothers of Invention and was released on 4 March 1968 on Verve Records. Frank Zappa wrote and composed it as a concept album. The main recording sessions ran from July to September 1967 at Mayfair Studios in New York. When the Beatles released Sgt. Pepper, Zappa decided to turn the record into a parody of it, because he found the Beatles insincere and felt they were only in it for the money. Verve, fearing a lawsuit, dared to use the parody cover only as an inner sleeve.
The album pokes fun at the left and the right, at hippie culture and at the commercialisation of youth culture. Zappa used recording techniques and tape editing for short songs, interrupted by dialogue and unrelated music. Verve and MGM censored the record heavily. Surprisingly, the hippies embraced the album. In 2005 it was added to the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry.
