Extensions
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album
Extensions was released on 31 October 1979 on Atlantic Records and was the fifth studio album by The Manhattan Transfer. It marked a new phase. Cheryl Bentyne had replaced Laurel Massé in early 1979, and Jay Graydon sat behind the controls as producer for the first time. It was also the first album with songs that were successful in both jazz and pop.
Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone reached number thirty on the Hot 100. The best-known track is Birdland, a composition by Weather Report for which Jon Hendricks wrote a vocalese lyric. It won a Grammy, and Janis Siegel received one for her vocal arrangement. The New York Times saw the group as the heirs of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross.
