Surf's Up

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Surf's Up · After the disappointing Sunflower, the band looked for a new image in 1970. New manager Jack Rieley had the matching stage suits abolished, made Carl Wilson the official leader and gave the group a new social tone. Recording ran from January to July 1971. Brian Wilson was less active in the studio than before, which is why the vocal arrangements sound thinner.

The lyrics more often deal with the environment, society and health. Carl Wilson contributed major songs for the first time, Long Promised Road and Feel Flows. The album is named after the closing track Surf's Up, which was originally intended for the unfinished album Smile. The title and the sleeve, with a painting after a sculpture called End of the Trail, nod to the earlier surf image. The album received mostly good reviews and reached number twenty-nine in the United States, higher than the group had reached with new work since 1967.
