Romantic Defiance

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Romantic Defiance was released on 30 May 1995 on Columbia. It is a studio album by the American jazz trumpeter Terence Blanchard and contains eight lyrical original compositions. He plays in a quintet with pianist Edward Simon, bassist Chris Thomas, drummer Troy Davis and tenor saxophonist Kenny Garrett, for whom it was a debut on tenor.

The album was well received. Billboard called it a strong, searching quintet record. Peter Watrous of The New York Times wrote that the group is exceptionally aware of dynamics and evokes a sense of calm in long quiet passages. Brian Morton and Richard Cook called the album wonderful in their Penguin Jazz Guide.
