Marquee Moon

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Marquee Moon · In the mid-1970s Television was one of New York's leading groups, with a regular spot at the club CBGB. Demos that Brian Eno made in 1974 did not please Tom Verlaine: he found them too cold and brittle. In August 1976 the band signed with Elektra, which let Verlaine produce, assisted by engineer Andy Johns. The recording took place in New York in November 1976, after weeks of rehearsals of four to six hours a day.

Verlaine and guitarist Richard Lloyd left the power chords of punk behind and chose interplay, melodic lines and countermelodies, with influences from rock and jazz. The lyrics are about youth, discovery and rapture, with references to Lower Manhattan. The record received wide praise and was unexpectedly successful in the United Kingdom.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Marquee Moon and notice how the two guitars alternate melodic lines and countermelodies, instead of just strumming chords.
