Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme · After the success of The Sound of Silence, Columbia quickly released a second album, which the duo themselves regarded as a rush job. For this third album, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were given much more time: almost three months in the studio, with Bob Johnston as producer. For the first time they worked on an eight-track recorder, and Simon demanded complete control over the recordings.
The album consists largely of acoustic songs, often written during Simon's stay in England in 1965. The mood varies greatly from song to song. Scarborough Fair / Canticle combines guitar, bells and harpsichord with vocals. In 7 O'Clock News / Silent Night the two sing the Christmas carol while news reports about, among other things, the war in Vietnam can be heard over it. Critics see the album as a breakthrough in recording technique and as one of their best works. In 1999 it entered the Grammy Hall of Fame.
