Goodnight Vienna
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Goodnight Vienna was the follow-up to Ringo, the successful album of 1973. It was recorded in Los Angeles in the summer of 1974 and released on 15 November on Apple Records. Producer Richard Perry and many of the musicians were the same as the last time, including Billy Preston, Klaus Voormann, Robbie Robertson and Harry Nilsson.
Of the other ex-Beatles, only John Lennon took part. He wrote the title track, played piano and suggested covering Only You (And You Alone) by The Platters. Elton John supplied Snookeroo, co-written with Bernie Taupin, and Nilsson gave Easy for Me. Only You was released as a single and reached number six in America. The album reached number eight there, and only number thirty in England. The reviews were generally favourable. The cover, with Ringo Starr as a space creature beside the robot Gort, is based on the film The Day the Earth Stood Still.
