Automatic for the People

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Automatic for the People was released in October 1992. R.E.M. began writing while the previous record, Out of Time, was still high in the charts. Guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry rehearsed without singer Michael Stipe and often switched instruments. As a result the sound became calmer, with more acoustic guitar and organ and fewer drums. The recording with producer Scott Litt followed in Woodstock, and on a few tracks there are strings by John Paul Jones.

The album reached number two in the United States and number one in the United Kingdom. Critics were mostly full of praise. Rolling Stone gave five stars. Six singles were released, including Drive, Man on the Moon and Everybody Hurts.

Listening

Listening tip. In Drive, listen to the strings that colour this sombre, quiet track. Notice how the vocals stay soft, even as the music grows bigger.
