Sonic Flower Groove
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Sonic Flower Groove · This debut album was released on 5 October 1987 on Elevation Records. At first the band worked for four weeks with producer Stephen Street, but the sessions were abandoned because they did not like the result. The ensemble then made a fresh start in London with Mayo Thompson of Red Krayola as producer. By the time the record was finished, it had cost 100,000 pounds.
The music is psychedelic, Byrds-like jangle pop. It is the only Primal Scream album with founder Jim Beattie, who appears on the cover as Jim Navajo. The reception was mixed. One reviewer called the record a real gem, another found it nothing more than fluff. The album reached number 62 on the British chart, but performed modestly for a major record company. That disappointment was an important reason why the original band broke up shortly afterwards.
