The Man I Love
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Man I Love was Peggy Lee's first album after her return to Capitol. The orchestra is Nelson Riddle's, who wrote the arrangements, and is conducted by Frank Sinatra. The record contains standards by, among others, George and Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Rodgers and Hart and Jerome Kern.
Allmusic gave the album three and a half stars. The critic William Ruhlmann observed that the singer often sounds like Billie Holiday, one of Sinatra's favourite singers: restrained, almost like a victim in the songs. He heard something dark resonating in Riddle's lush strings and called the combination of singer, conductor and arranger superb.
