Up for the Down Stroke

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Up for the Down Stroke · On 3 July 1974 Parliament's second album was released, the first on the label Casablanca Records. The record reunited George Clinton with bassist Bootsy Collins, who had been out of the group for two years. Collins would go on to play a key role on all of Parliament's Casablanca albums. The title song was the group's first hit and is still one of the best-known P-Funk songs. Testify is a funk version of the old song (I Wanna) Testify by the Parliaments. The Goose and All Your Goodies Are Gone also come from the group's work in the 1960s.

The album was originally called Whatever Makes Baby Feel Good. On the first cover, Clinton hung over a woman in distress, wearing a black wig and gloves like a monster's.
