Blizzard of Ozz

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Blizzard of Ozz · After Black Sabbath had fired him in 1979, because his drug problems caused tension, Ozzy Osbourne signed with Jet Records and set up a solo band. The debut album was released in September 1980 in England and in March 1981 in America. He wrote a large part of it with guitarist Randy Rhoads and bassist Bob Daisley, who stayed temporarily at the Welsh Monnow Valley Studio. Later Lee Kerslake became the regular drummer. It was recorded at Ridge Farm Studio. Because the band was dissatisfied, Max Norman took over the production from Chris Tsangarides.

Crazy Train and Mr. Crowley were released from the album as singles. Goodbye to Romance was the first song to be written and is, according to Osbourne, a farewell to Black Sabbath. Dee is an instrumental piece by Rhoads for his mother. A controversy later arose around Suicide Solution. Even so, the album received much praise and in 2017 stood at number nine on a Rolling Stone list of the best metal albums.

Listening tip. Listen to Dee and notice Randy Rhoads's guitar playing without vocals or band around it. He wrote this piece for his mother.
