Speakerboxxx / The Love Below

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Speakerboxxx / The Love Below · This double album consists of two solo records released under the duo's name. After his first Grammy, André 3000 wanted to do something different and tried an acting career in Los Angeles. That went moderately, and he began making an album of his own at home with Pro Tools, a drum machine and synthesizers. Big Boi then decided that his next project would be Speakerboxxx. Arista felt that separate solo albums were not suitable at that moment and bundled them into an album of more than two hours.

Speakerboxxx is Southern hip hop under the influence of Parliament-Funkadelic, with lyrics about single parenthood, religion and politics, among other things. The Love Below largely abandons hip hop for pop, funk, jazz and psychedelia, inspired by Prince, and revolves around love. Hey Ya! and The Way You Move reached the top of the American Hot 100. The album won a Grammy for Album of the Year, only the second hip hop record to manage that.
