First Meeting
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
First Meeting was recorded in May 1979 and released in January 1980 on ECM. The Czech bassist Miroslav Vitouš plays here in a quartet with reed player John Surman, pianist Kenny Kirkland and drummer Jon Christensen. Kirkland and Christensen together form the rhythm section. Surman plays soprano saxophone and bass clarinet, Vitouš himself the double bass.
All the compositions are by the bassist, and the record mainly shows his qualities as a writer and player. The AllMusic reviewer, David R. Adler, gave three stars and recommended the album, but noted that it is hard to find.

Listening tip. Listen to Silver Lake and notice the interplay between Vitouš's double bass and John Surman's reed instruments.
